Foreign Aid

According to the USAID Greenbook, total economic assistance from the US to the rest of the world was roughly $27 billion in 2006. America is nearing $10 trillion dollars of debt. It is utterly absurd to think that the American taxpayer is footing the bill to pave roads on the other side of the planet while our own infrastructure needs at home suffer.

Since the Marshall Plan after WWII, America has effectively been the world's piggy bank. For too long, America has focused too much energy on policing, and developing the world (with little success) rather than taking care of herself. Some might call this viewpoint compassionless. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The fact of the matter is that private contributions to other countries far exceed government aid. Numerous studies have shown that private aid is much more effective at assisting the developing world. The government should get out of the international welfare business and start focusing on repaying debt and taking care of infrastructure at home.
