The reason for the high cost of medical care in this country is that the forces of the market are completely absent from it. Through either insurance, or government programs, the cost of care is hidden from the patient. This allows hospitals, doctors and drug companies to charge whatever they want because the patient never gets the bill.
We must get to a system where patients actually see the bill. Only then, will competition and market forces begin to bring down prices.
In order to accomplish this, I would allow employers to transfer the insurance premium they are currently paying to the employee. The employee would just buy the deductible health insurance they need and place the difference in a tax-free health savings account which would retain its balance year after year.
Keeping consistent with my views on free trade, I would remove restrictions on purchasing medicine from Mexico and Canada.
