2008 Congressional Campaign

Iraq

The war in Iraq is an undeclared war based on false information. The sooner we end it, the better. Our continued presence in the region is only making the problem worse.

Our soldiers have performed amazingly well and have done as much good as possibly can be done. It's time to bring them home. My specific plan for Iraq would be a phased withdrawal of troops over the course of 12-18 months.

As we draw down, more control would be transferred to Iraqis. This is the only way to get them to assume responsibility for their own future. As long as we stay there, they have no incentive to work together to seek solutions. We have effectively created a geopolitical welfare state in Iraq, where they turn to us for all of their needs. After we leave, the Iraqis and their neighbors will have no other choice but to cooperate and work together toward a secure future in the region. As long as we stay, their dependence on us will remain, and the incentive for reconciliation will be absent.
